< Background and Objectives of the Center’s Establishment >

“Ayu of the Nagara River System: the Connection Between Ayu and the People of the Satokawa” was designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) in December 2015.

Among various initiatives that are being carried out in order to conserve and promote the sustainable use of “Ayu of the Nagara River System”, one goal is to provide inland fishery-related aid for developing countries.

The Nagara River

The Inland Fisheries Training Center shall be established within the Research Institute for Fisheries and Aquatic Environments with the aim of contributing to both GIAHS and the potential of inland fisheries in developing regions through the dissemination of the knowledge, techniques, expertise and systems of fisheries and breeding that support the “Ayu of the Nagara River system”, itself a designated GIAHS.
